WIR BAUEN EINE NEUE STADT is the title for the Forward and the first 3 Chapters of exhibitions, workshops, performances, artist walks and
food events starting in 2021.

A Forward with Three Chapters

The Forward takes the format of a group show which starts the series WIR BAUEN EINE NEUE STADT, a reference to the 1981 song with the same name by Palais Schaumburg.
It showcases the work
of those who physically and conceptually
helped build WIRWIR.
The artists are;
Shannon Bool, Julien Villaret, Andy Hayleck, Ezequiel Melero, Adrian Schiesser, April Gertler, Ayala Gazit, Susanne Kohler, Lau Licciardi, Mark Emblem and Waszem Khan.

Chapter One examines the physicality of a city. Exploring questions of materiality, landscape, in addition to ecological resources used; the exhibition, performance and artist walk will focus on these concepts from a wide perspective.
Artists and architects included in this chapter are; Shannon Bool, Onur Ceritoğlu, and Van Bo Le Mentzel.

Berlin is home to over 190 nationalities and as a result Chapter Two considers the definition of a city through its inhabitants and their food.
A series of food events will explore not only how communities come together but how a community is defined by food and traditions.
Artists included in this chapter are; Soydivision, Maureen de Jong and April Gertler.

How do communities interact and connect to one another? Chapter Three contemplates the activation of communities through interactive workshops on mending what is broken, using waste materials, in addition to artist walks through various parts of Neukölln.
Artists included in this chapter are; Lucila Kenny, Anne Dhyr & Christian Schmidt-Møller and Adrian Schiesser.

The name WIRWIR is directly connected to the history of the 49m2 space. Amongst its many iterations of use, it was once a brothel created specifically for the Turkish community. The word vır vır means brothel in Turkish street slang and by changing a few letters, but not the pronunciation, the name WIRWIR, meaning we we, was born.

WIRWIR is part of Dérive UG - which is an umbrella organization that has hosted a wide variety of projects over the years such as; SONNTAG, PICTURE BERLIN, DETLEF, and IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS. The concept of WIRWIR was and continues to be developed by Adrian Schiesser and April Gertler. Over the years they have recognized a need to experiment with varying formats for artistic presentation and in so doing, create multiple access points for visitors. Those formats have included collaborative artist walks, a parade/demonstration, an art bar, lecture/baking performances, and exhibitions in people's homes.

WIRWIR will host ongoing projects, and will also develop new projects which will continue to shift formats by offering multiple access points to art works, and artists.

by Uli Aigner

Back in 2015, Adrian and April met the Austrian artist Uli Aigner. They invited her to participate in SONNTAG which she did in 2016. She showed the first 250 vessels from her (then) new project EINE MILLION. The premise of the project was to make one million ceramic vessels for the rest of her life.
We were thrilled to work with her and she was equally happy to have a chance to show the new project in Berlin for the first time.

Since then, conversations, collaborations, apple strudels and much more have been shared. After telling Uli about WIRWIR she offered to lend WIRWIR her project TERRITORIAL CLAIM for a year.

TERRITORIAL CLAIM is a project within EINE MILLION created in 2016 - it includes 206 vessels of all shapes and sizes. Every vessel has a country written on it and every country is a member state of the United Nations.

It is with incredible thanks to Uli Aigner and Michal Kosakowski for entrusting WIRWIR with this amazing project for the next year.
